Post-Brexit Portugal — nothing is automatic anymore
UK citizens lost freedom of movement in 2020. You now need a visa, your driving license doesn't exchange automatically, and healthcare depends on your residency status. We track what changed.

Visa requirements changed
Post-Brexit, UK citizens need a D7, D8, or Golden Visa like any other non-EU citizen. The rules, income thresholds, and processing times aren't the same as they were in 2019.
Driving license exchange
UK licenses can be exchanged for Portuguese ones within 2 years of residency, but the window is tight and IMT requires specific documents. Miss it and you retake the test in Portuguese.
S1 healthcare form (for pensioners)
UK state pensioners can use an S1 form to register for free healthcare in Portugal, but you need to apply through the NHS Overseas Healthcare Team before you move, and then register with your local Centro de Saude.
Key deadlines for brits
- ●Driving license exchange (within 2 years of residency)
- ●Portugal IRS filing (April 1 – June 30)
- ●UK self-assessment (January 31, if still UK taxpayer)
- ●Residence permit renewal (2 years from arrival)
