AIMA Residency Permit Process 2026
AIMA (Agencia para a Integracao, Migracoes e Asilo) handles all residence permit applications for non-EU citizens in Portugal. The process has been improving but still involves significant wait times.
Who Needs an AIMA Appointment
- D7 visa holders (passive income / retirees)
- D8 visa holders (digital nomads)
- D2 visa holders (entrepreneurs)
- Golden Visa holders
- CPLP nationals
- Family reunification applicants
EU/EEA citizens do NOT go through AIMA — they register at the Camara Municipal instead.
Current Wait Times (2026)
- Booking to appointment: 2-4 months (improved from 6+ months in 2024)
- Appointment to card delivery: 2-4 weeks
- Total process: 3-5 months
Documents Required
- Valid passport with your visa
- NIF (tax number)
- Proof of Portuguese address (rental contract or property deed)
- Proof of financial means (bank statements, employment contract, pension statement)
- Health insurance or SNS registration
- Criminal record certificate from your home country (apostilled and translated)
- 2 passport-size photos
- Proof of payment of fees (currently around 72 EUR for the first permit)
- Any visa-specific documents (investment proof for Golden Visa, employment contract for D8, etc.)
Step-by-Step Process
- Book your appointment online at aima.gov.pt as soon as you arrive in Portugal
- Gather all required documents while waiting for your appointment date
- Get your criminal record certificate apostilled and translated (this takes time — start early)
- Attend your appointment at the scheduled AIMA office
- You'll be photographed and fingerprinted at the appointment
- Your residence permit card (Titulo de Residencia) is mailed to your Portuguese address in 2-4 weeks
- Your first permit is valid for 2 years
While You Wait
- Your visa remains valid while your application is pending
- You can travel within the Schengen area with your visa
- Keep all documents organized — AIMA may request additional documentation
- Check your AIMA portal account regularly for updates
Renewal
- First permit: valid 2 years
- Renewal: valid 3 years
- Apply for renewal 30-60 days before expiry
- After 5 years: eligible for permanent residency or citizenship (requires A2 Portuguese)
Important Notes
- Book your appointment on day one — the wait is the bottleneck
- Bring originals AND copies of everything
- If you miss your appointment, you go to the back of the queue
- AIMA offices are strict about appointments — don't arrive late
- The 16-consecutive-month rule: you cannot be absent from Portugal for more than 6 consecutive months, or 8 months total in the first 2 years, without risking your permit
